FINISH IT!

Nebraska Alliance – Times Herald
Lincoln, July 19, 2006

Why the world should stand back and let Israel do what it has to do.
Dave Wilson, Capt. Retired, US Navy

When I was in the Navy, I once witnessed a bar fight in downtown Olongapo (Philippines) that still haunts my dreams. The fight was between a big oafish Marine and a rather soft-spoken, medium sized Latino sailor from my ship.

All evening the Marine had been trying to pick a fight with one of us and had finally set his sights on this diminutive shipmate of mine…

Figuring him for a safe target. When my friend refused to be goaded into a fight the Marine sucker punched him from behind on the side of the head so hard that blood instantly started to pour from this poor man’s mutilated ear.

Everyone present was horrified and was prepared to absolutely murder this Marine, but my shipmate quickly turned on him and began to single-handedly back him towards a corner with a series of stinging jabs and upper cuts that gave more than a hint to a youth spent boxing in a small gym in the Bronx.

Each punch opened a cut on the Marine’s startled face and by the time he had been backed completely into the corner he was blubbering for someone to stop the fight. He invoked his split lips and chipped teeth as reasons to stop the fight. He begged us to stop the fight because he could barely see through the river of blood that was pouring out of his split and swollen brows.

Nobody moved. Not one person.

The only sound in the bar was the sickening staccato sound of this sailor’s lightning fast fists making contact with new areas of the Marine’s head. The only sound I have heard since that was remotely similar was from the first Rocky film when Sylvester Stallone was punching sides of beef in the meat locker.

Finally the Marine’s pleading turned to screams…. A high, almost womanly shriek. And still the punches continued relentlessly. Several people in the bar took a few tentative steps as though they wanted to try to break it up at that point, but hands reached out from the crowd and held them tight. I’m not ashamed to say that mine were two of the hands that held someone back.

You see, in between each blow the sailor had begun chanting a soft cadence: "Say [punch] you [punch] give [punch] up [punch]… Say [punch] you [punch] were [punch] wrong [punch]".

He had been repeating it to the Marine almost from the start but we only became aware of it when the typical barroom cheers had died down and we began to be sickened by the sight and sound of the carnage.

This Marine stood there shrieking in the corner of the bar trying futilely to block the carefully timed punches that were cutting his head to tatters… Right down to the skull in places. But he refused to say that he gave up… Or that he was wrong.

Even in the delirium of his beating he believed in his heart that someone would stop the fight before he had to admit defeat. I’m sure this strategy had served him well in the past and had allowed him to continue on his career as a barroom bully.

Finally, in a wail of agony the Marine shrieked "I give up” and we gently backed the sailor away from him.

I’m sure you can guess why I have shared this story today.

I’m not particularly proud to have been witness to such a bloody spectacle, and the sound of that Marine’s woman-like shrieks will haunt me to my grave. But I learned something that evening that Israel had better learn for itself if it is to finally be rid of at least one of its tormentors:

This is one time an Arab aggressor must be allowed to be beaten so badly that every civilized nation will stand in horror, wanting desperately to step in and stop the carnage… But knowing that the fight will only truly be over when one side gives up and finally admits defeat.

Just as every person who had ever rescued that bully from admitting defeat helped create the cowardly brute I saw that evening in the bar, every well-intentioned power that has ever stepped in and negotiated a ceasefire for an Arab aggressor has helped create the monsters we see around us today.

President Lahoud of Lebanon, a big Hezbollah supporter and a close ally of Syria, has been shrieking non-stop to the UN Security Council for the past two days to get them to force Israel into a cease fire.
Clearly he has been reading his autographed copy of ‘Military Success for Dummies Arab Despots’ by the late Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt. Ever since Nasser accidentally discovered the trick in ’56, every subsequent Arab leader has stuck to his tried and true formula for military success:

Instigate a war.

Once the war is well underway and you are in the process of having your ass handed to you… get a few world powers to force your western opponent into a cease fire.

Whatever you do, don’t surrender or submit to any terms dictated by your enemy. That would ruin everything! All you have to do is wait it out and eventually the world will become sickened at what is being done to your soldiers and civilian population… and will force a truce.

Once a truce has been called you can resume your intransigence (which probably caused the conflict in the first place), and even declare victory as your opponent leaves the field of battle.

This tactic has never failed. Not once!

In fact it worked so will for the Egyptians in 1973, that to this day they celebrate the Yom Kippur War – a crushing defeat at the hands of Israel – as a military victory! No kidding… it’s a national holiday over there!

President Lahoud has already begun to shriek like a school girl to the UN Security Council to "Stop the violence and arrange a cease-fire, and then after that we’ll be ready to discuss all matters."

Uh huh. Forgive me if I find that a tad hard to swallow. He allowed Hezbollah to take over his country. He allowed the regular Lebanese army to provide radar targeting data for the Hezbollah missile that struck the Israeli destroyer. He has turned a blind eye while Iranian and Syrian weapons, advisers and money have poured into his country.

And now that his country is in ruins he wants to call it a draw.

As much as it may sicken the world to stand by and watch it happen, strong hands need to hold back the weak-hearted and let the fight continue until one side finally admits unambiguous defeat.

To Kill An American

19 May 2006 at 11:47 pm Filed in:Uncategorized No Comments

By an Australian Dentist:

You probably missed it in the rush of news last week, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American.

So an Australian dentist wrote an editorial the following day to let everyone know what an American is So they would know when they found one. (Good one, mate!!!!)

"An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish,German,Spanish,Polish, Norwegian,  Swedish, Finnish,  or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani or Afghan. "

An American may also be a Comanche, Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as Native Americans.

An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses.

An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.

An American lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness.

An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return.

The Adkins Coat of Arms

24 April 2006 at 4:00 pm Filed in:Horse Shoe No Comments

The Adkins familyAdkins Coat of Arms

can trace their ancestors back to the ancient territories of the English and Scottish Border Ridings between the 11th and 12th centuries.

The Shield is: Silver, a cross formed by a fleur de lys between four black stars.

The motto is: "Vincit cum legibus arma".
(He shall repress violence with laws)

ADKINS: is a Patronymic name, derived from the early given name Adam (Hebrew adama = red earth or man), originating in England, France, Catalan, Italy, Germany, and Poland, as well as the Ashkenazic Jewish, Dutch and Flemish. Diminutive forms of Adam are Adkin, Atkin, Aitkin, Adnett, Adnitt , and Ade . Italian variants are Adami, Dami ; Polish and Jewish versions include Adamski . The Hugarian cognate is Adam , in Provencal it is Azam , in Spain, Adan.

The name ADKINS originated during the Thirteenth and Fourteenth centuries in England. Charles Bardsley states in his "English and Welsh Surnames" that "…the surname ADKINS was derived from a combination of the surname Adam and the diminutive kin." Following one tradition of the Anglo-Saxon people a well liked child would have the first syllable of his name combined with the diminutive kin to form a new name. In our case, the first syllable of Adam (Ad) was combined with the diminutive kin to form Adkin. Adkin would then be the child’s pet or nickname and in many cases would become his legal name for life. In old English, the name was spelled ADEKYN, however, in later centuries the name according to Bardsley "…was sharpened to Adkin." Bardsley continues "All the other spellings were formed by misspelling." This method of name forming was also used to identify a son named after his father much as we use Jr. today. A child named after his father, Adam, would be called Adkin to indicate ‘Little Adam’ or son of Adam. Continue Reading

Walker Update

27 March 2006 at 3:08 am Filed in:Walker No Comments

As many of you know, Jessi L. Patterson, this past January became Jessica L. Patterson-Teal, upon  marrying the boy next door, Daniel Christopher Teal.  So, yes,  we have had a family addition; I’m a Mom again! :)   Phew: No more Diapers!  This Weekend, 3/24, the local famlies gave them a wedding reception!  Johnny Gallman acted as Master of Ceremonies: Mark, my uncle Johnny and Chris’ uncle Brian gave them a blessing . I wish you all could have been; there it was just beautiful! Core members of each of the  famlies have known each other generations; however the younger generations did not have that relationship, but they were soon caught up on who was who by the older generations.   It was a wonderful experiance, the kids racked up on gifts and Plenty Hugs and kisses. The day of the reception landed on  Prom night, So the kids left us to attend prom. I’m sure they had a wonderful time , ‘though I can’t really report on it…:)   I was fast asleep!  I would love to send some pictures IF I can get them up.

Texas Twins Gang

30 January 2006 at 3:25 am Filed in:Texas Twins No Comments

I hope all is well with everyone.  I think this is a great way to catch up and see what everybody else is up to. Hannah and Brandon are growing up fast and eating me out of house and home.  Brandon's appetite is unreal and we haven't hit the teen years yet. Hannah is in her 7th year of dance and started taking piano lessons (thanks to Aunt Beth) in the middle of January.  She also is in band at school and plays the flute. Brandon starts up soccer in March. He also loves theatre arts, one of his electives at school. We are also looking into Karate lessons for him and Bruce is thinking about taking them with him. They are also in the middle of their first year confirmation classes at our church. They keep us busy!  Bruce started a new job in October with a software company named Cybersoft. They recently won a contract with the Houston School District. He has made a move into developing at this company and is enjoying the challenge. He has a commute compared to where he has worked before, but 23 miles down FM1960 is much better than any interstate in Houston. We are trying to get back on our feet financially and are adjusting to getting paid once a month.  He loves to "game" on his computer in the evenings. I call it his square-headed girlfriend. As a family, we  are involved at our church, Christ the King Lutheran.

Christmas Note from John & Bev

8 January 2006 at 3:30 am Filed in:Uncategorized No Comments

I can't believe it's the holiday season again. It seems like we just get the decorations put away and it's time to get them out again. The months go by so quickly. I guess that's a sign we're getting old – how could that be?  Our year has been uneventful and that's good. It means we've both been healthy and just living the good life. Bev has been very busy with her school work, but she completed her associate degree this semester and has decided to take it easy for a while. It's back to quilting and doing nothing but fun things in 2006.  We did some traveling this year – had a wonderful trip to Oregon where we attended a nephew's wedding and visited with a dear old friend. In September, we spent a week in Galveston with Bev's sibling and were fortunate to be there the week before the city started evacuating for Hurricane Rita. October found us at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri where we spent a few days with old friends.

God blest us with our first great-grandchild this year. Joshua Christopher Adkins made his debut on October 13th and is the most beautiful baby ever! Of course we may be a little prejudiced, but he is a pretty special little guy.  Johnny is still busy volunteering with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The job got a little hectic when they took on some of the hurricane evacuees along with the others they serve. When you realize how much the evacuees lost, it makes you really thankful for what you have, and willing to share what you can. Our pickup got a lot of use hauling furniture and food. So much use in fact, Johnny decided he needed a new one, so he's the proud owner of a new Ranger.  We do hope that God has blest all of you during this past year and will continue to do so the next. Best wishes for a happy Christmas and a wonderful new year. Our door is always open so anythime you're in the neighboorhood, please stop by.
